New and full moons of 2027

Why the counts flip

Twelve lunar months are about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so every two or three years a calendar year holds thirteen of one kind of lunation. In 2026 it was the full moons; in 2027 it is the new moons — 13 of them, with August holding two (2 Aug 2027 at 9.9° Leo and 31 Aug 2027 at 8.1° Virgo). There is no blue moon by the monthly definition this year; there is its quieter twin, a month with a second new moon. Both are artefacts of where the 29.5-day rhythm happens to fall against the months, and both are computed here rather than looked up.

Five eclipses, three in one season

An eclipse season is the fortnight or so in which the Sun passes a lunar node, and it normally holds two eclipses — one solar, one lunar. When a season opens with a lunation just inside the eclipse limit, a third can fit before the Sun leaves the node: a penumbral lunar eclipse on 18 Jul 2027 at 25.8° Capricorn, a total solar eclipse on 2 Aug 2027 at 9.9° Leo, a penumbral lunar eclipse on 17 Aug 2027 at 24.1° Aquarius. The two lunar eclipses that bracket the solar one are penumbral — the Moon crosses only the outer shadow, a dimming rather than a bite — which is why they are flagged as eclipses here and rarely make a list of visible ones. The 2 Aug 2027 solar eclipse at 9.9° Leo is total.

The degree that walks backwards

Because each new moon falls about 29° after the last — a little less than one sign — the lunation degree slides slowly toward the start of the signs as the year goes on. The year's first new moon is at 17.3° Capricorn; its last, on 27 Dec 2027, is at 5.8° Capricorn — the same sign, some 12° earlier. Full moons do the same on the opposite side of the zodiac. For anyone with a natal point in the middle degrees of a sign, this is the year the lunations come to it; for early degrees, that is the year after.
