An ordinary new moon, and why that matters

A new moon is the instant the Moon's longitude catches the Sun's — found here as the root of their separation on an hourly Skyfield/JPL DE440 lattice. This one is not an eclipse: the conjunction sits 19.7° from the lunar nodes, far outside the limit. After a month with two eclipses, that is the fact worth stating first. The eclipse season closed with the partial lunar eclipse of 28 Aug 2026; the cycle returns to its plain rhythm here, and the next eclipse of any kind is 6 Feb 2027.

18.4° Virgo, and a sky changing gear

The conjunction is at 18.4° Virgo, in the second decan of a mutable sign — the degree the tradition reads as sorting, mending and making useful, the seed of a month spent on method. That reading is collective and it is the same for every chart. What gives this particular new moon its texture is the day before it: Venus enters Scorpio at 08:06 UTC on 10 Sep 2026; Mercury enters Libra at 16:20 UTC on 10 Sep 2026; Uranus stations retrograde at 5.6° Gemini at 21:00 UTC on 10 Sep 2026 — 3 events in about 19 hours. A new moon that follows two sign changes and a station opens a month in which several planets have just changed register.

The days after

The Moon pulled away at once: by 18 Sep 2026, 20:43 UTC it stood a square ahead of the Sun at 25.9° Sagittarius, and the month it opened closed at the new moon of 10 Oct 2026, 15:50 UTC. It did not stay as plain as it began. Venus was already crossing degrees of a retrograde it had not yet started — that shadow opened 31 Aug 2026, 11 days before this conjunction — and stationed retrograde 3 Oct 2026, 07:14 UTC at 8.4° Scorpio, 22 days in. An ordinary lunation is not an empty one; it is one whose dated events belong to other bodies.
