The number that cannot be looked up

Reference works give Pluto a 248-year orbit and leave it there, which implies its squares to a fixed degree arrive on a tidy 124-year rhythm. They do not. Across 262 measured intervals on 1801-01-01–2398-01-01, weekly lattice, the gap between successive squares to one natal degree runs from 83.6 years at the short end to 161.5 at the long — a factor of nearly two, decided entirely by which part of the zodiac your Sun occupies. Pluto's orbit is eccentric enough that it spends about twelve years in Scorpio and over thirty in Taurus, and every timing statement about Pluto inherits that asymmetry.

Squares come in opposite pairs

A square is a 90° separation, and a body is 90° from two degrees at once — one ahead of the natal point and one behind. Those two are 180° apart, so the cohort table below always shows the same window against a pair of opposite signs. When Pluto squares Taurus Suns it is squaring Scorpio Suns on the same days, from the opposite side. The tradition distinguishes them: the waxing square, with Pluto ahead of the Sun, is read as a test of a cycle under construction; the waning square, with Pluto behind and on its way back, as a reckoning with what that cycle produced. Which one you are getting is geometry, and the table states it.

What the square adds to Pluto

Because the zodiac's signs alternate in a fixed order of modality, two points 90° apart almost always share a mode and differ in element. Both want the same kind of motion and disagree about its direction, which is why the tradition reads squares as tension that resolves through action rather than through waiting. Attach that to Pluto — the principle of what will not be negotiated with — and the reading is of a demand that does not accept postponement, arriving at the point of the chart least willing to yield.

What the Sun brings to it

The Sun is identity and conscious will: not an area of life but the centre the areas are viewed from. A square from Pluto is therefore read as pressure on the organising principle itself rather than on one of its departments — which is precisely why the duration is the important number. At a p90 of 1152 days and a longest observed passage of 1411, this is not a period anyone experiences as an event.

The shape of the passage

There is no single-crossing version: Pluto moves so slowly that its small yearly retrograde loop always retraces ground it has just covered. Reading a five-crossing series as five separate events is the common mistake; it is one passage with five exact dates inside it, and the useful thing the dates give you is a set of moments to compare against each other.
