The geometry, and why it comes in pairs

Ninety degrees separates two points that almost always share a modality and differ in element — the zodiac's fixed alternation of cardinal, fixed and mutable guarantees it. Two things wanting the same kind of motion in different directions is the structural reason the tradition reads a square as friction that discharges through action. And because a body is 90° from two degrees at once, one ahead and one behind, the table below always flags a pair of opposite signs together: when Pluto squares one, it is squaring its opposite from the other side on the same days.

A slow body on a fast point

The transiting Moon crosses a degree in under two hours; Pluto can spend a year on one. That mismatch is the whole texture of this contact and the reason its numbers look nothing like the lunar transits people are used to reading. What the Moon is, precisely

The tradition's Moon is not mood in the everyday sense. It is instinct: needs, memory, the felt sense of safety, and everything the body decides before the conscious will has had a turn. The Sun is what someone intends to be; the Moon is what is already running. A hard angle from Pluto is therefore read as pressure on the substrate rather than on the plans — which is why the classical literature files this contact under interior rather than circumstantial, and why a page that promised you events from it would be inventing them.

Why the recurrence is a range, not a number

Across 262 measured intervals on 1801-01-01–2398-01-01, weekly lattice, consecutive Pluto squares to one degree fall between 83.6 and 161.5 years apart, median 116.5. That near-doubling is Pluto's eccentricity: it spends roughly twelve years in Scorpio and more than thirty in Taurus, so the same 90° of travel takes wildly different amounts of time depending on where in the zodiac it happens. Any source quoting a single figure for this is quoting an average of two very different things.

Birth time changes the answer here
