The one Uranus hard contact most people actually get

Uranus takes about eighty-four years to circle the zodiac, which puts its conjunction to any natal degree outside most lifetimes. Its squares are a different matter: they come twice per orbit, a median 42.3 years apart — 958 intervals measured on 1801-01-01–2398-01-01, weekly lattice, ranging 38.7 to 44.5. A normal lifespan therefore contains the waxing square in the early twenties and the waning square in the early sixties, with the famous opposition between them around forty-two. This page is about the two bookends of that pattern.

What the 90° relationship does

Because the signs run cardinal, fixed, mutable in a repeating order, two points a quarter-turn apart nearly always share a modality and differ in element. They want the same kind of motion and disagree about its direction, and neither of them is the passive one. The tradition's reading of a square as tension that discharges through action rather than through patience falls out of that geometry, and it is the reason a square is not simply a weaker opposition — an opposition at least gives the two points a shared axis to negotiate on.

Waxing at twenty, waning at sixty

The two squares are not the same contact twice. In the waxing square Uranus leads the Sun by 90°, the first hard angle after their conjunction, and the classical reading is a test of a direction only recently taken. In the waning square Uranus trails, closing the cycle, and the reading turns to what the arrangement built over the intervening decades was actually for. The cohort table computes which branch each Sun sign is receiving, since it is a fact about where Uranus is rather than a matter of interpretation.

Why nearly every one of these has three dates

926 of 976 decidable contacts perfected three times; only 50 perfected once. The ratio behind that is simple: Uranus covers about four degrees a year going forward and retraces about four in its annual retrograde loop, so once it is inside orb the loop is almost always wide enough to bring it back. A window with a median of 141 days and a p90 of 390 is therefore usually a season with three landmarks, not a date. Reading the three as separate events is the common error; the middle one is the retrograde crossing of a single passage.

Deviation meeting the organising centre

Uranus is the principle of what does not fit the existing arrangement — read as liberation by some writers and disruption by others, and the geometry does not adjudicate between them. The Sun is identity and conscious will, the centre the rest of a chart is viewed from. A hard angle between them is read as the arrangement being questioned at the point that has the most invested in it. That describes where the pressure lands. It does not describe an outcome, and nothing here should be read as forecasting one.
