A trine is a same-element relationship

One hundred and twenty degrees is exactly a third of the circle, and because the zodiac's elements repeat every fourth sign, two points that far apart share an element almost without exception. Fire with fire, earth with earth. That is the whole structural basis for the tradition reading trines as easy: the two points are not in tension because they are already working in the same mode of operation. Nothing has to be reconciled, which is also the classical complaint about them — a trine describes something available rather than something demanded, and availability that is never acted on leaves no trace.
